A major Chesterfield criminal case took an unexpected turn after a judge dismissed all eight charges against Kalvon Turner, the man accused of opening fire inside Shamrock Pub and injuring five people in January 2025.

Turner was arrested a few weeks after the shooting and spent more than 18 months behind bars without bond or a trial. His first jury trial was scheduled for February 2026, but prosecutors requested a delay after saying a witness had undergone emergency surgery related to a bullet fragment from the shooting.

The trial was pushed to September, but Turner's attorney challenged that delay after reviewing the witness's medical records. The defense argued the procedure wasn't the type of emergency prosecutors had described and that the lengthy delay violated Turner's constitutional right to a speedy trial.

The judge agreed.

All eight charges — including four counts of aggravated malicious wounding — were dismissed with prejudice, meaning prosecutors can't simply refile the same charges.

This one isn't necessarily over, though. The Commonwealth announced in court that it plans to appeal the ruling.

A proposed merger involving Virginia's biggest electric utility just cleared a major hurdle — and the outcome could eventually affect plenty of Chesterfield households.

Dominion Energy shareholders voted 98% in favor of the company's proposed merger with NextEra Energy.

Shareholder approval doesn't make the deal final. The companies still need regulatory approval, including from the Virginia State Corporation Commission, which has until January to make its decision.

Dominion says the merger could help keep rates affordable by giving the combined company greater financial strength and purchasing power. The company also says Virginia customers would receive $1.78 billion in shareholder-funded bill credits if the deal goes through.

Not everyone is convinced.

Critics have raised concerns about rising utility bills, local accountability and whether Virginia customers would remain a priority after a merger with a much larger company. Chesterfield Supervisor Jessica Schneider was among those criticizing the proposed bill credits, arguing they don't go far enough to offset the financial pressure residents and businesses have already experienced.

For now, the big decision moves from shareholders to regulators.

Firefighters were back on Church Road in Matoaca Tuesday after a brush fire that had previously been contained flared up again.

Chesterfield Fire and EMS crews returned to the scene and worked alongside the Virginia Department of Forestry for several hours to bring the fire back under control.

The good news is that the fire remained contained during the flare-up.

Brush fires can sometimes reignite even after crews initially get them under control, particularly when dry vegetation, heat or lingering hot spots are involved. That's why firefighters often continue monitoring an area after the visible flames are gone.

Crews stayed on scene working to make sure the renewed fire didn't spread beyond the containment area.

There was a little more excitement than residents wanted around Watch Hill and Walton Park roads after construction crews accidentally struck a natural gas line.

Officials say a third-party contractor damaged a Columbia Gas of Virginia line along Watch Hill Road, bringing Chesterfield Fire and EMS crews and Columbia Gas technicians to the scene.

As a precaution, seven nearby homes were evacuated while crews worked to control the leak.

Thankfully, technicians were able to make the situation safe, and Chesterfield Fire and EMS confirmed the leak was contained. Road closures were expected to remain in place for several hours while permanent repairs were completed.

Drivers traveling through the area were asked to slow down, watch for flaggers and posted signs, and avoid the immediate area when possible.

Nighttime drivers around Route 288 and Route 60 in Midlothian will want to plan ahead this week.

Several ramps around the interchange are scheduled to close overnight Sept. 8–10 from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. while paving work is underway.

On Sept. 8 and 10, northbound Route 288 ramps serving Route 60 and Watkins Center Parkway will close, with drivers detoured north to Route 711/Huguenot Trail before returning south on Route 288.

Additional closures are planned Sept. 9 involving the northbound Route 288 ramps to Route 60. The eastbound Route 60 ramp to northbound Route 288 is also scheduled to close Sept. 9 and 10, with a detour using southbound Route 288 and Woolridge Road.

Bottom line: if you travel through this interchange at night, give yourself a little extra time.

Here's some welcome good news to finish things off.

Chesterfield County Fire and EMS crews responded to a house fire on Mandolin Drive, where firefighters discovered some four-legged residents who needed a helping hand.

Crews successfully rescued two dogs and two cats from the home.

Even better: all four animals are okay! ❤️

House fires can turn dangerous incredibly quickly, and pets sometimes hide when frightened, making finding and rescuing them especially challenging for firefighters.

Thankfully, this particular call ended with the kind of update everyone likes to hear — four pets safely reunited with their people thanks to the work of Chesterfield's firefighters.
